| This is an excellent example of a Ducati 996 SPS (Sports Production Special). The 996cc engine size had been used by Ducati in works racers and in the 916R race bike and the 916 SPS and the UK Fogarty Replica, but in 1999 Ducati decided to mass produce a model with this displacement and the 996 was born which signalled the end of the legendary 916. The 996 model, although very similar in looks to the 916, was a much more flexible machine, some say even lazy, compared to the 916. The 996 series was officially referred to as ´´Hyper Sports.´´The SPS model was essentially a tuned track bike for the road. The engine was the same as a 996 but it was considerably lighter, producing 124 bhp. The SPS used lighter 5 spoke wheels and the bike utilised Ohlins rear suspension with Showa Front forks. The bike also had an adjustable steering head which allowed geometry changes to the steel tube trellis frame.Lots of carbon bits and Full Ducati Service History. This is Headstock Number 797. | |
